This rich and gooey Chocolate Cobbler features a tender, buttery base with a luscious chocolate topping that bakes to a perfect warm, pudding-like dessert. It’s an easy and comforting treat that combines simple pantry ingredients for a delightful chocolate indulgence.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Mixture

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • ¾ cup white sugar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Topping Mixture

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cups boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and melt butter: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place the 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter into an 8-inch square baking dish and put it in the preheating oven to melt while the oven heats up.
  2. Prepare the batter: In a medium bowl, sift together 1 cup of self-rising flour, ¾ cup of white sugar, and 1 ½ tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder. Stir in the ½ cup milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  3. Mix the topping: In a separate small bowl, combine the remaining 1 cup white sugar and ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, mixing well.
  4. Assemble the cobbler: Remove the baking dish from the oven when the butter is melted. Pour the flour mixture evenly over the melted butter. Sprinkle the sugar and cocoa powder mixture evenly over the batter layer.
  5. Add boiling water: Slowly pour 1 ½ cups of boiling water over the entire dish without stirring. The water will sink through and create a rich chocolate sauce under the cake.
  6. Bake the cobbler: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake uncovered for about 30 minutes or until the top is set and cake-like. The dessert will have a chocolate pudding layered beneath with a soft cake top.

Notes

  • Use self-rising flour for the right texture; if unavailable, substitute all-purpose flour with 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder and ¼ teaspoon salt.
  • Be careful when pouring boiling water to avoid splashing and ensure even distribution.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated before serving.
  • Do not stir after pouring water; the layering effect is key to the cobbler’s texture.
