Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Sauce

  • 1 1/2 lbs beef flank steak, sliced thin
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced

Thickening and Vegetables

  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 1/4 cup water (for cornstarch slurry)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients in Crockpot: Add the thinly sliced beef flank steak, soy sauce, beef broth, brown sugar, sesame oil, and minced garlic into the crockpot. Stir to combine all ingredients evenly.
  2. Cook Beef: Cover and cook the mixture on low heat for 4 hours, allowing the beef to become tender and flavorful as it simmers in the sauce.
  3. Prepare the Sauce Thickener and Broccoli: Approximately 30 minutes before the cooking time is complete, mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 1/4 cup cold water to create a slurry. Stir this mixture into the crockpot sauce to thicken it.
  4. Add Broccoli: Add the 3 cups of broccoli florets into the crockpot and stir gently to coat them in the sauce. Continue cooking for the last 30 minutes until the broccoli is tender but still crisp.
  5. Serve: Once the beef is tender and the broccoli is cooked to your liking, serve the dish hot over steamed rice for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For best results, slice the beef thinly against the grain to ensure tenderness.
  • You can substitute flank steak with skirt steak or sirloin if preferred.
  • Adjust the brown sugar quantity to control the sweetness of the sauce.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, add a bit more cornstarch slurry, but avoid over-thickening.
  • To keep broccoli crispier, add it during the last 20-25 minutes instead of 30.
  • Serve immediately once done to retain the best texture and flavor.
