Ingredients

Scale

Cake Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box)
  • 12.8 oz hot fudge sauce

Pudding Layers

  • 3.4 oz chocolate instant pudding mix (for first layer)
  • 1 3/4 cups milk (for first pudding layer)
  • 3.4 oz chocolate instant pudding mix (for topping layer)
  • 1 3/4 cups milk (for topping layer)

Topping

  • 8 oz Cool Whip, thawed
  • 30 Oreos, crushed (divided: about 3/4 for folding in topping, remainder for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: Follow the instructions on the chocolate cake mix box to prepare the cake batter, then bake it as directed.
  2. Cool and Poke Holes: Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool for 10 minutes. Use the back of a spoon to poke holes evenly across the surface of the warm cake.
  3. Apply Hot Fudge: Warm the hot fudge sauce in the microwave until it is thin enough to pour smoothly. Pour the hot fudge evenly over the cake, allowing it to seep into the holes for a rich flavor infusion.
  4. Cool Completely: Let the cake cool fully to room temperature before proceeding to the pudding layer.
  5. Prepare Pudding Layer: In a medium bowl, whisk together the first package of chocolate pudding mix with 1 3/4 cups of milk until it starts to thicken. Pour this pudding layer evenly over the cooled cake.
  6. Chill: Place the cake with pudding in the refrigerator and chill for about 20 minutes to set the pudding layer.
  7. Make Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the second package of chocolate pudding mix with 1 3/4 cups milk. Refrigerate for about 10 minutes to let it set fully.
  8. Fold in Cool Whip and Oreos: Remove the pudding from the fridge and gently fold in the thawed Cool Whip and approximately 3/4 of the crushed Oreos until evenly mixed.
  9. Top the Cake: Spread the pudding and Cool Whip mixture evenly over the chilled pudding layer on the cake.
  10. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos on top of the cake as garnish. You can serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh Oreos for the optimal crunch and flavor.
  • Make sure the hot fudge is warmed enough to soak into the cake holes but not too hot to melt the cake.
  • Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour before serving to allow all layers to set well and flavors to meld.
  • This dessert can be prepared a day ahead and stored covered in the refrigerator.
  • To make it gluten-free, use a gluten-free chocolate cake mix and gluten-free Oreos.
