Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 puff pastry sheet

Filling

  • 1 cup fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1/4 cup artichokes, chopped
  • 1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
  • 1/8 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cracked pepper to taste
  • Red pepper flakes to taste

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon water

Instructions

  1. Preheat and thaw: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Thaw the puff pastry sheet according to package instructions until it is pliable but still cold.
  2. Prepare filling: In a medium bowl, combine the chopped fresh spinach, chopped artichokes, shredded parmesan cheese, softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, minced garlic, salt, freshly cracked pepper, and red pepper flakes. Mix well until fully blended.
  3. Cut puff pastry: Lay the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut it in half lengthwise to create two equal rectangular pieces.
  4. Assemble sandwich: Spread the spinach and artichoke mixture evenly over one of the puff pastry halves. Then gently place the other puff pastry half on top, creating a pastry sandwich with the filling in the middle.
  5. Slice into strips: Using a sharp knife, cut the layered pastry into six long, equal strips along the length of the pastry.
  6. Form swirls: Take each strip and twist it gently to form a spiral swirl. Tuck the ends underneath each swirl to secure their shape during baking.
  7. Apply egg wash: Beat the egg with the teaspoon of water to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of each swirl generously with the egg wash to enable beautiful browning.
  8. Bake: Place the swirls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 22-24 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  9. Cool and serve: Remove from the oven and allow the swirls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For a cheesier filling, add a bit more parmesan or mozzarella if desired.
  • These swirls can be made ahead and baked just before serving for convenience.
  • Adjust red pepper flakes according to your preferred spice level.
  • Use frozen artichokes if fresh ones are unavailable, just drain well before chopping.
  • Serve with a side of marinara or ranch dip for extra flavor.
